It frustrates me when I see other people stealing someone else's work.
I was browsing through Miracle todaylike I do every day and I found a fic that looked relatively interesting and so I started reading it. I get part way through and I'm like...wow...this sounds really familiar. And I couldn't place it at first but then all of a sudden out pops dialogue (and plot line) from ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
wedspawn 's fic Tarnished Angels. I love her whole SMM universe and I re-read it all the time, so I know this story pretty well.
I almost shat myself right then and there when I realized it was a flagrant, blatant steal (I mean everything, dialogue, plot, only the characters were changed). I didn't see any sort of credit. I read through some of the comments and I wanted to throw up when people were like, "I love your writing, it's so good," because IT WASN'T THEIR WRITING. (Okay, so a good portion of it was changed, but not enough to think it was completely the other author's idea and not wedspawn's.)
NEWSFLASH. DON'T STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK, POST IT IN A DIFFERENT COMM, AND THEN EXPECT NO ONE TO NOTICE BECAUSE I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT SOMEONE WILL.
I won't reveal who it was, that's not my place, but I really just needed to rant.
BECAUSE STEALING IS LOW. CREATE YOUR OWN WORK FOR THE LOVE.
Now, asking beforehand is different. For example, if someone came to me and said, I'm doing this project where I'm rewriting other people's fics using different characters, kinda like a remix idea, and I'd like to use such and such a story that you wrote, I'd be like OMG YES. I would see it as an honor, that someone would like something I wrote enough to redo it with other characters.
But...just...
DON'T PILFER SOMEONE ELSE'S HARD WORK.
STEALING ISN'T WRITING (RIGHT) AND YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF.
