Prologue
Katsura had always been a clean restaurant, at least it was to any guest who didn’t bother to look too closely. Immaculate white linens covered the tables, genuine crystal glasses sparkled under the light of iron chandeliers, and swaths of curtain that dangled from the ceiling all conveyed a false sense of warmth in the crisp atmosphere. However what went on behind the restaurant front was far from “clean.” In fact, it was downright dirty. Swindling always was.
Tucked behind a one-way mirror was a bar slash kitchen (though that description was really pushing the limits of the Japanese language.) Although this bar was as atmospheric as the restaurant it spied upon, there was a chill that lurked at it’s edges, just waiting to pounce on anyone that wasn’t supposed to be there.
There were never more than four people in the room; there were only two people in the room now, both of them seemingly riveted by the sound of a spoon sliding around the inside of a tea cup, dissolving one too many sugar cubes in already sweet tea.
“I need you healthy.”
“This and that are completely unrelated.”
“The information?” A young man ignored the statement spoken to him and held out a hand expectantly.
An older man, the wrinkles on his face belying his age, placed the cup of tea down, scrunching his nose at it’s taste, and pushed a rather thick manila envelope across the reflective surface of the bar. “50 million.”
The young man picked it up and perused the pictures paper-clipped to the envelope’s surface. His dark eyes slid back and forth, widening in slight surprise at the equally young faces staring back at him. Two boys and one girl.
“Ariake family,” the older man said, ignoring the query, “One time swindlers, or so they claim. Scored quite a bit of cash through various means, now they’re using the money to open a western-style food restaurant.”
“50 million for a family that doesn’t even swindle anymore? I don’t care about people who don’t swindle anymore.”
“They’re smart. And besides, you should know...once a swindler, always a swindler.”
The young man tapped the pictures a couple more times before swiping the envelope up with his right hand and tucking it away into the folds of his jacket. “Drink some tea...with less sugar.”
He left through the glass doors, swaggering confidently and the older man could almost see the wheels turning in the swindler’s brain.
“Why did you do that? You said you weren’t going to sell them; they don’t even know that you exist.”
The older man turned to stare at the woman who had padded behind the bar, a sad look permanently etched across her porcelain features.
“I lied. "
