Swindler Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Shizuna knew that something was up when she walked onto the rooftop of George’s shop and saw her two brothers waiting for her with serious expressions on their faces.
“What?”
“We need to talk,” Koichi said quietly.
Shizuna felt like she knew what about and she shot Taisuke a dirty look. He didn’t look away or show any sign of remorse like she thought he might. “What about?” She asked.
“We followed you last night.”
Shizuna counted to ten before she said quietly, “How dare you. I’m leaving.”
“Shi, wait, just listen.”
“Why? Why should I listen to you, you went behind my back! Don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong!”
“Shi, please, he isn’t who you think he is,” Koichi approached her and gently laid a hand on her shoulder, “I didn’t want to go behind your back. I really didn’t. You’re right that it was wrong, but...just listen. Please just listen.”
“Fine.” Shizuna let herself be led to the blanket on the ground (the one they’d been using since they were kids) and she got a terrible feeling of dread roiling in the pit of her stomach when her brothers laid on either side of her and wrapped their arms around her middle. That had never been a good sign.
“I got a good look at Kurosaki, Shizuna.”
“If you tell me he’s ugly I’m going to smack you.”
“I’ve seen him before.”
The three listened to sounds of the city below them for awhile (cars honking, dogs barking, policemen yelling,) before Taisuke continued, “It’s him, Shi, the one who was there that night.”
Her brother’s voice had been gentle in her ear but it had felt like knives cutting straight through to her heart.
“You-you can’t know that.”
“I’ve never been so positive about anything in my entire life.”
Shizuna only felt her tears when hands began to wipe them from her face. “He-he was so...nice. I like him. Nii-chan, I like him.”
“I know. I’m sorry, Shi, I’m so, so sorry.”
Shizuna wasn’t sure how long she lay their crying, how many times her hair had been stroked, how many comforting kisses had been pressed into hair, onto the crown of her head. Shizuna wasn’t really sure of anything anymore, only her broken heart.
When she could breathe and her tears had stopped, she asked, “do you think he knows who I am?”
“Most likely.” Her brothers still both held her tightly.
“Bastard.” Neither brother scolded her for language (not that she would have listened anyway), “Cold hearted bastard.”
There was silence for awhile and then Koichi said quietly, “This is a chance, Shi. I know...I know it hurts but...can you go out with him again?”
“Do you have a plan in mind already?”
“Well, no. Tell me about him, Shi, what can we use?”
“Ah!” Shizuna sat up abruptly. “Restaurant!”
“What?” Koichi sat up carefully.
“I...I told him we wanted to open a Restaurant and he told me yesterday that he found a building for sale...that’s he’s selling...”
Her voice trailed off as the seriousness of her statement dawned on the three of them. “Okay,” she breathed, “Alright. So...he has control over my cell phone, and my bank account-”
“Your bank account?” Koichi yelped. “Shi!”
“He...he offered me an account in a bank that...that has really low rates and...shit.”
“More explaining and less swearing.”
“He gave me information on a bank that handles all of his transactions. He said that there was no red tape, no high interest rates, and that they really liked him. Shit why don’t I see these things until later? It’s the perfect bank for a swindler.”
Shizuna fell back onto the blanket with a frustrated sigh, “He even said that the two of you could get accounts there.”
“Good thing you forgot to tell us until now or he could have access to every penny we own,” Taisuke patted the top of his sisters head, attempting to comfort her.
“If you’re trying to make me feel better, you’re failing,” Shizuna muttered.
“How can we make you feel better?” Koichi asked.
“Obliterate that moron’s ass from the face of the planet.”
“We said the three of us would kill him when we found him,” Koichi murmured, “and we have found him.”
“Then what the hell are we waiting for?”
“And that ladies and gentleman, is the Shizuna that I love. Come on, let’s go plan something dastardly; I’m already getting excited.”
For the first time that night, Shizuna smiled.
Taisuke felt ten times better dressed up in a suit with a fake beard then he did in his normal street clothes. He loved being someone else. He loved acting. Really, he loved swindling, and he had missed it. Dreadfully.
Aniki had followed Kurosaki around during the times he hadn’t been with Shizuna (they now regularly went on dates,) and had discovered that he frequented a Restaurant known as Katsura.
So here Taisuke was, acting like a high-class business that he wasn’t, watching people eat. He hadn’t seen anything useful the first night he visited. Or the second. He dragged Koichi along the third night (not in a row) just in case, but he saw nothing suspicious until the fourth night.
The fourth night he was winking at a waitress who had served him the first night when he had caught sight of a patron entering the doorway and completely sidestepping the hostess’ stand.
Taisuke watched as the man walked past the many tables and then back behind a curtain which was obviously and employees only area.
It took the disguised swindler a moment to realize who he’d actually seen and he spit out a mouthful of his wine because of it. It was that stuck-up, you’re on your own, I’m only interested in my career, damn, police officer.
He really wasn’t sure if that meant anything. But he’d tell Aniki anyway...because if it did mean something, his brother would be the one to figure out what it meant.
“My brother and I would love to see that building you found.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Yay!”
Shizuna had tried to tell herself that Kurosaki was not, in any way, at all cute when he had given her a thumbs up. It had sort of worked.
Now she stood in front of a run down building which was making her swallow hard because it looked eerily similar to the one her parents had run...to the one that their parents had run. Koichi was holding her had comfortingly.
“What do you think?” Kurosaki was smiling brightly.
“It’s perfect.”
“You haven’t seen the inside.”
“It’s perfect,” Shizuna whispered, trying not to cry.
Damn you. I fell in love with you. How dare you swindle my heart.
Koichi held her hand tighter.
A/N *bows and bows and bows* I don't know why I had such a hard time writing this. I just stared and stared at the blank page ad re wrote and....gah...it's not even that long. I'm sorry. :(
